Which way did he go?
Steve had signed up for a photo walk sponsored by Midwest Photo Exchange. I tagged along to give myself a break from writing lectures and grading papers. We both enjoyed the morning, especially the lovely French pastry we consumed after we were done taking photos.

π X 2
We'll have a mostly vegetarian feast today, except for the salmon filets I'll bake with a cranberry glaze. Included for today's menu: kohlrabi, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, fresh green beans, quinoa, carrots, olives, dates, mashed potatoes, cranberries, lentils and rice, bread, pie and ice-cream. Not your traditional feast, for sure, but very tasty and extremely healthy…..

Michael and Tania wedding
My daughter was a bridesmaid for my son's wedding, which was last weekend. I think she's beautiful, but I'm rather biased.

The big apple
My son, Michael, married Tania this past weekend in upstate New York. We started our trip there in New York City, by doing a visit to B&H photo. Steve's never been in Manhattan, and it was an interesting excursion. He hated the driving in that area and was paranoid the entire time, but the street photography ops are great.
Here's one of my street photos from that visit:

Weimarwiener
Luna Pi - aka Moon Pie. One of my lovely dachshunds. Her coloring is called Isabella and Tan. We like to think of her as a weimar-wiener because of her coloring. She's very sweet.

My father
I spent the 4th of July with my folks in Eugene, Oregon this year. We started the day by doing the Butte-to-Butte Mayor's fitness walk, which is a 4.5 mile walk from near Spencer's Butte to Skinner's Butte. My dad walked it for the first time last year and had been training for it for the entire year since then. I told him I would be walking it with him this year, and it was so great to share this with him. He came in first in his division of 80-99 year old males. He'll be 83 in a couple of weeks. We averaged just over 15 minutes per mile, which is pretty good for an octogenarian, eh? It's not too bad for this middle-aged mom, either.

Moon Pie
One more week until Luna Pi comes to live with us. She'll be seven weeks old this Sunday. She can leave her dam at eight weeks. Today I was able to visit the puppies for the first time. I took Emma along so that she could meet her "rival" and get used to being around a puppy. I'll be posting pics to Emma's blog by the weekend, so check out the puppy pics on Emma the dog blog (linked from this site).

Last pics from 2008
Ok, so I'm two months behind in posting pics for the blog, but, hey, I've been very busy.I'm taking a day to recover from jet lag and so while I'm sitting in my recliner I'll try to catch up and post pics from the past couple of months. I have thousands of pics from China to sort through and process, so I imagine it will take a while to post all the cool stuff from my trip.
At any rate, here are some pics from the end of December 2008.
Christmas morning. It wasn't one of our best holidays, so I won't dwell on the details.

Michael loves the hat he bought in Ireland. It could probably stand to make a trip to the dry cleaners by now.

Richard doesn't like to have his photo taken - can you tell?

One of Santa's helpers.

Steve and I have been doing long walks in anticipation of our Nepal trek. One of our routes takes us to west campus where there are a pair of red-shouldered hawks in residence. This is the female.

Here's the male.

We gave ourselves Panasonic Lumix cameras and here is one of the first pics from mine. It's been a cold winter and this is from a pond on west campus.

Steve, trying out his gear during our walk.

Miscellaneous pics from November 2008

Weekends are for long walks at Highbanks Metro Park. November was the beginning of some snow and all the leaves were pretty much gone. It makes for some lovely landscape scenes.

Dressing for the weather is not a problem. We've been collecting a bunch of gear in anticipation of our trek to Everest Base Camp, which will be in May 2009.

November also gives us a chance to have a long weekend off for the Thanksgiving holiday. Meghan likes to hang around in pjs on long weekends. Emma looks more elegant here, I think. . .

The boys sharing a laugh, and it's a rare photo of Richard smiling. He doesn't like having his picture taken.

Emma wanted to share in the Thanksgiving feast. Steve picked her up after we had finished eating and she was all eyes and nose. . .
She did get a bit of people food as I was cleaning up - lucky dog!

NYC with Michael

The first stop was at St. John the Divine Cathedral. It was undergoing renovation after a fire, but I enjoyed looking at the interesting stone work.

The outside is covered in interesting sculptures - some in limestone, some in bronze. I would have liked to have had some information about the artisans who made these, and to know a little about the symbology. Unlike the European cathedrals I've seen, many of the sculptures on the column supports depicted modern scenes. I won't make a lot of comments, but just post the pics for you to peruse.

The bronze doors depict traditional Bible scenes.

The side door wasn't so elaborate in its embellishments.

The handle was interesting.

The Children's sculpture museum is close to the cathedra.

This seems like a rather bizarre image for a sculpture specifically aimed at children. . .

AHV alert!

This albino peacock was really working the crowd.

Michael's in the background to the left.

This bird was looking for treats.

Another view of the sculpture.

We walked through Central Park and I showed Michael the glacial grooves in the rocks. He hadn't noticed them before. I think it's pretty cool to see the remnants of the last ice age.

This part of the park is lovely, but somewhat scary with all the people lurking on the trails. I wouldn't want to be walking here by myself.

The landscape design is beautiful, though. It's easy to forget you're in Manhattan.

The wildlife has obviously adapted to the urban setting.

This raccoon let me approach close enough that I could have touched him.

More beautiful scenery.

Some role playing game was going on - these youths rushed about yelling and having "sword" fights.

There were a lot of ball games in the park, also.

Michael.

We ended the afternoon at the Guggenheim museum, which is undergoing renovation. It's such a cool place to visit. The exhibit was by Cai Guo-Qiang: I want to believe. It was really interesting!
It was definitely a whirlwind trip, and I enjoyed it very much.
