CMC at the Southern Theatre

Preconcert music by Chamber Music Connection students. For the Chamber Music Columbus concert series at the Southern Theatre, CMC students do a half hour concert prior to the main concert. These are very talented musicians, who usually start into the program at Grade 4 and stay until they graduate high school. The senior students do master classes with world-famous chamber quartets and groups, compete in major competitions, and delight chamber music enthusiasts at every concert.

First snow #2

First snow #2, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

I have a few more of these winter scenes to post. This one is from my neighborhood after the only snow we've had this season. La Niña is having a huge influence on our winter precipitation - mostly rain.

Portland Head Lighthouse, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

I'm going back through my summer photos. I've not processed most from my trip to Maine, so I'll be adding some summer pictures over the next little while. I need the reminder that there are nice days to come, even though we are experiencing gray, dreary days for now.

ICM - winter at Whetstone

ICM - winter at Whetstone by andiwolfe
ICM - winter at Whetstone, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

I thought I was done with this series, but I still have a few more to go. Long exposure in low light yields a mysterious image under normal conditions. Add the intentional camera movement and it becomes another realm.

Would you believe that this is an ordinary building grate on the OSU campus? I found it near the power plant and decided to experiment with long exposure and intentional camera movement.

The park bench in our front yard had a dusting of snow. A bit of intentional camera movement during a long exposure yielded an interesting abstract.

You Will Reap What You Sow

Camphor burl; turned, carved and painted. ca 5 7/8 X 5 3/8 inches.

For the "Beyond Containment" exhibit. 2012 AAW symposium.

Throughout human history, ideas and objects have been represented as symbols, often sacred and kept by holy men or shamans. Symbols and representative art from many cultures are found in caves, rock overhangs, or on surfaces of rocks. Ideas are spread as cultural memes - as cave art in prehistory, and via multimedia of contemporary times. The influence of family, tribe, religion, education, national identity determines the outlook and behavior of the individual.

This sculpture has several layers of meaning via the shape (a biomorphic ideation of fertility), and the symbols painted on the interior surfaces of each chamber. The symbols are from as many cultures as I could find, ancient and contemporary, and represent the following concepts: love/hate, light/dark, peace/war, happy/sad, life/death. These paired concepts are opposite each other on the vessel.

Here's a detail photo:

You Will Reap What You Sow - detail

For the exhibit, I will provide a key to the symbols used.

Dusk, long exposure, intentional camera movement together with the only snow we're likely to get in January. La Niña has influenced a very mild winter here in Ohio.

First snow

First snow, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

We're having our first real snow of the season as of yesterday. It will go through tomorrow. The accumulation began just before sunset, so at dusk Steve and I went out to the front of the house to play with our cameras.

Low light conditions are really great for doing light painting, so, of course, I did some ICM (intentional camera movement) frames. This is our street, looking toward the south.

Intentional Camera Movement; Glacier Ridge Metro Park.

So the news this morning has mentioned the impact of the internet protest about SOPA and PIPA. I contacted my senator and representative yesterday as well as not posting visual content to the web. I hope the combined efforts of millions of people contacting their government representatives, and bringing attention to such poorly drafted bills, make a difference.

Winter landscape

A break from the light painting series. This is a late afternoon photo from Glacier Ridge Metro Park. Shooting directly into the sun is always a challenge and I found it particularly so with my Tokina 11-16 mm lens. This wide-angle lens is pretty good, optically, but there are more issues with chromatic aberrations and light streaks than I have with my Canon L series lenses.

Steve and I went to Whetstone Park of Roses yesterday just before sunset. We concentrated efforts on the ravine. The lighting was very dim, snow was falling, the ground was dusted in the previous 24 hrs worth of snow, and there was ice on the creek. This is a 3 second exposure at f22, hand held camera movement.

Sunset in a forest makes for a great setting for doing some light painting. You can see the motion I did with the camera by observing the streaks of orange and yellow, which is the glow from the sunset peaking through the grove of trees.

Intentional Camera Movement - my new phase of photography. The impressionistic qualities of the blurred image combined with some careful processing to bring out the features makes this series an interesting challenge for me. This photo was taken at Glacier Ridge Metro Park.

Light painting #4

Light painting #4, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

I'll post #3 eventually, but I wanted to put this one in today's report. The sun was just disappearing to produce a beautiful orange glow on the horizon. I was in a dense thicket of trees looking towards the setting sun. Processing was done using Aperture 3.2.2 and Nik Software's Color Efex Pro 4. I've designed some custom filter recipes for my light paintings, and I like the effects I'm getting with this series.

Light painting #1

Light painting #1 by andiwolfe
Light painting #1, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

My favorite paintings are found in the Impressionist genre of Monet, Cezanne, Pizarro, etc. I've seen a lot of interesting photographs that use a technique known as "light painting" where the camera is left 'wide open' to allow light to burn patterns into the frame. Often this is at night with someone using an LED flashlight to etch a pattern onto a black background. Sometimes it's done by moving the camera. For this photo, I moved the camera while exposing the frame. I like the effect and did a whole series from a visit to Glacier Ridge Metro park yesterday afternoon. I'll post more of these images here as I find time to process them.

Dusk at Waterman Farm

Dusk at Waterman Farm by andiwolfe
Dusk at Waterman Farm, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

The light dusting of snow we had Jan 2, 2012 made for some early winter photography scenes over on the farm. It was a cold and blustery day, but, despite the 10 degree windchill, it was a nice walk. Taking photos in the dim light of dusk is a bit challenging, but I do like the way this photo came out. I used some filter effects to get the faded and grainy texture.

Mohican Bridge

Mohican Bridge by andiwolfe
Mohican Bridge, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

Covered bridges are always fun to see, and a challenge to photograph. This one is over the Clear Fork River, near Mohican State Park. Maybe it's actually in the park, I really don't know the boundaries. It was late in the day when Steve and I found it. I set up my tripod, did manual exposure and bracketed up and down. This is a composite of three exposures, using HDR processing.

The start of a snowy night at Waterman Farm. The first snow of the year, cold wind, and dusk - what combo could be better. We walked the farm last evening, wearing our down coats and carrying minimal camera gear. It was invigorating.

New Year's resolution...

New Year's resolution... by andiwolfe
New Year's resolution..., a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.

I'm participating in a Project 52 on Google+ this year. A project 52 is where you take, process and post a photo each week, each one with a different theme. This week's theme was New Year's Eve/Day. I don't usually make resolutions, but I thought I should try to do more walking each day, so my first photo of the year reflects that idea.

Winter sky

Winter sky by andiwolfe
Winter sky, a photo by andiwolfe on Flickr.
Happy 2012! It doesn't feel any different to me than does 2011, but the start of a New Year is just that - the start of a new year.  I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, but I might change my mind about this year. I have several ideas, but I need to think about it for awhile.

Today the sky is gray and dreary, but December 29, 2011 offered a bit of blue sky. This photo is from Mohican State Park.
